Origin and Evolution of the Name Philippines

1.) Ma-yi --> Early Chinese traders who visited Mindoro called our country Ma-yi which means land of Gold since they buy gold in Mindoro.
2.) Maniolas --> Claudius Ptolemy called the Philippines by this name during 90-168 AD
3.) Archipelago of St. Lazarus --> When Magellan came in 1521, he called our country by this name
4.) Felipinas --> name given to us by Ruy Lopez De Villalobos last 1543 in honor of King Philip II of Spain.
5.) Filipinas --> name during the Spanish colonial or the formal colonization of the Spaniards of Philippines. Introduced a new alphabet

Origin of the Philippines

1.) Theological Point of View

--> Man is created by God. After the time of Noah and the great flood, many islands appeared. So the descendants of Noah spread out to many parts of the world.

2.) Myth

--> A giant was tired of holding a huge rock. The rock fell down and broke to many pieces. These became the many islands of our country.

--> The sea and the sky were quarreling. The sky then threw rocks down to the sea, and thus was formed the islands.

3.) Scientific Point of View

a.) Philippines was a remnant of a pre-historic continent called Mu or Lemuria. Due to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, the continent submerged in the ocean.
b.) Volcanic eruption- gradual emergence of islands due to the eruption of sea volcanoes
c.) Philippines was part of the Sunda Self or the continental shelf of Asia. The ice age ended and melted, thus flooding the land bridges connecting Asia and the Philippines.

On June 11, 1978 President Marcos signed Presidential Decree 1596 declaring Kalayaan Islands as part of the municipality of Palawan. Our Sea Area has been increased by UNCLOS (united nations convention on the law of the sea) odf December 10, 1982
